Life is a war, you have to fight for yourself constantly, and there is nobody to fight with you, because everybody else is also busy fighting for their own life. - Alex Evans

Rules & Guidelines
Tue Jun 24, 2008 1:15 pm by Exvietarmis Dyaus
1) Be polite. Try to be considerate. Make some basic attempts at using proper capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar because they all aid in communication. Use profanity as a spice; not the main course. Please do not use HTML to embed sound or video clips (such as those from YouTube) into your posts. If you want to share, post a link instead.

2) Don't topic-crap. If you wish to correct what you see as an error or fallacy in the initial post of a topic, that's fine; however, if you have a problem with the basic premise of a discussion such that you wish it weren't taking place at all, ignore it. Don't tell everyone in the topic they're wasting their time discussing the issue because if they agreed with you, they wouldn't be.

3) Think before you post. It can sometimes be hard to determine where acceptable conversation ends and attacks or other rules violations begin, especially in the heat of a debate. If you are unsure whether a post might cross the line, feel free to message a long time member for advice — especially before making a post you might regret later. It is required that you read the Ban Structure so that you may become familiar with the terms we give you. Failure to comply may result in a temp ban.

4) Do not post without actually saying anything relevant. Just because you aren't selling something doesn't mean it isn't spamming. Posting in the Storyline Section is meant for Role-Plays following the Hierarchy history set-up only.

5) Mature content is permitted within any topic so long as the one whom started the topic has permitted so, if you wish to use such content but are not sure, then ask the poster of the topic if you may. Alternatively if a member within the topic post other than the topic poster has an issue with such PM a moderator to sort out the issue.

The following guidelines are a collection of best practices for being a well-respected contributor to the Role-play. Violating these guidelines will typically not result in Moderator action, though you could easily earn the scorn of your peers. As such, adherence to these guidelines is strongly recommended.

1. Lurk and Learn
The best way to find out what should and should not be done in any role-play is to look around and see what other people are doing or being told not to do. Most long time members post in a way consistent with how they would like new members to post and make good role models to emulate. When in doubt about whether something is acceptable or not, one of the long time members will be able to help; they'll know what's okay and what isn't.

2. Read Carefully
Role-play has some elements of story and developing plot which all of the players are trying to keep in tune with. If you don't read the other posts carefully, you may find yourself confused by what's going on; or worse, breaking the continuity and risking being ignored. In order for us to ensure that you have read these rules, it is required that you private message an admin or a moderator, telling us that you've gone over and accepted these regulations. The same rules apply for the Ban Structure. Failure to do so may result in warning. If you have not done as asked by a week following the notice, you will be temporarily or, in some cases, permanently banned, unless you give a viable reason for your incapability of carrying out the task.

3. Use Proper English
In the real world, how you present yourself is often at least as important as what you are trying to present. Even the most qualified candidate is unlikely to receive a job with a Fortune 500 company if he shows up to an interview wearing a ragged tee-shirt and jeans. Conversely, a good suit and well pressed slacks can make even a mediocre candidate appear above average to an interviewer.

The same is true of posting in Role-Play. Regardless of the merits of what you want to say, people will generally ignore you if you consistently fail to use proper English. AOL and SMS abbreviations, lack of appropriate white space, erroneous or missing punctuation, and poor spelling can all make posts difficult to read or understand. People need to want to read what you have to say, and just as the interviewer will tend to ignore the man in rags, your peers will tend to ignore ragged posts.

4. Take Your Time
One advantage of Role-playing in a forum is that there is a lot of time to write coherent, thoughtful posts. Communication is typically not done in real-time, but rather, spread out over several hours, or even days. This gives you a lot of time to make sure that when you post, you post what you mean to. It is required of every new member that you post a suggestion in the suggestion topic, so that as this forum grows we can better suit the needs of our members. If you are going to be inactive, alert an admin to this, so that you are not banned for your inactivity. If you neglect to do so, we will send a warning and, if it is not replied to within a week of its time, you will be banned.

5. To make it easier within the forum, use the subject line when replying to a post to show who you are directing your actions towards. If you are directing actions towards a large group then you should name the people within your post instead. This is not a requirement merely an option to help you better enjoy your time here.

6. Know the Tier System
The Tier System is one way in which you can communicate the level of difficulty you plan to build into your plots. In many new plots, you will select a tier, or small ranges of tiers, or even different tiers for different parameters, to give everyone a quick guide to what should be expected.

The tier system is as follows:

Tier 1-3
o Quality: Low (Spelling/Grammar expected, but no one expects you to be a master writer.)
o Control: Low (Free-form.)
o Survivability: Very High (You are damn near invincible.)
o Technicality: None-low (Bare bones story; maybe a character sheet. You can usually jump right in. You will probably make it up as you go along.)

Tier 4-5
o Quality: Medium (At least 2-3 paragraph posts; try to expound on your character's motivations and emotions a bit.)
o Control: Medium-Low (Just don't step too far out of line or the other role-player might gently reign you back in.)
o Survivability: Medium High (You might die, but don't expect it.)
o Technicality: Low-Medium (Additional details about the world provided. Basic tech and magic expounded upon. Plot may have a bit more info.)

Tier 6-8
o Quality: High (At least 3-4 paragraphs. Try to describe not only the characters in more depth, but the environment around them as well.)
o Control: Medium (Expect the other role-player to know where the plot is going and make you stick to it.)
o Survivability: Medium (Deaths may happen, but the other character won't kill you off at the drop of a hat.)
o Technicality: Medium-High (Weapon specifications and maps may be provided. Expect to know details about the story that won't come in until later in the plot.)

Tier 9-10
o Quality: Very High (Try to write as much and as well as you feel you can. If you accept a high-tier quality game, have some experience under your belt.)
o Control: High (The storyline-creator probably has a plot in mind and wants you to stick to it. This doesn't mean that they won't allow you to surprise them, but don't get too far out of line or...)
o Survivability: Low (There is a high chance you could die. Be warned.)
o Technicality: Holy... (Expect to read a 3000+ word dissertation on the world and everything you'll need to know to play.)
