Has Kai ever had to deal with the loss of a loved one?: His mother died upon
giving birth to him, and his father died in The Great Falling.

How did this loss affect Him? His mother having died giving birth to him, he
blamed his existence for her death leaving him to doubt himself often. He
became angered, and set off to join the war to avenge his father’s death.
